On July 25th, our Nicaraguan office of Consortium Centro América Abogados and the International Trademark Association (INTA) organized a joint seminar denominated "The Madrid Protocol, advantages and disadvantages for the adherence of Nicaragua". The main purpose of the seminar was to offer to the participants, general and practical knowledge of the application of this international Treaty, administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which was represented by Betty Beredson, who is responsible of its Office of Information and Promotion. In the first section of the seminar, the President of the Subcommittee of INTA on the System of Madrid, Mr. Olof Fickert, explained the main advantages and disadvantages of the System of Madrid. Then Mr. Gerhard Bauer, Chief of Trademarks of Daimler Chrysler, presented the experiences of private companies in the application of this treaty. Finally, Mr. John Rodriguez, Legal Adviser of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) explained the governmental experience of the United States. The second section of the seminar was devoted to learn about the national experience of Nicaragua with regards to Trademarks; this segment was presented by Mrs. Ambrosia Lezama, Director of the Registry of Intellectual Property of Nicaragua, who focused on the process for registration of trademarks and the scope of its protection. Finally, the Nicaraguan businessman Mr. Gerardo Baltodano commented on the actions that the company Cafe' Soluble, S.A. has undertaken to reach the registry of its marks abroad. Consortium Centro América Abogados participated through the Head of the Intellectual Property Departments of each Central American country. |
