As per informed by the American Chamber of Commerce – Guatemala (“AMCHAM”), the United States Trade Development Agency recently announced a project that is out for competitive bid for companies that can develop national energy and mining Geographical and Information System (“GIS”) for Guatemala’s Ministry of Energy and Mines (“MEM”). The objective is to develop a national GIS and associated Information Technology (IT) solutions to improve the MEM’s licensing approval process for extracting natural resources in Guatemala (such as oil, gas, and minerals) and to decrease the negative impacts created by illegal fuel smuggling and alteration activities in Guatemala. As the United States and Guatemala get ready for the CAFTA-DR (Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement) to enter into force shortly, the GIS implementation is intended to improve the business climate for domestic and foreign investments in the Guatemalan energy and mining sectors.
